Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital Trust
RLBUHT provide hospital services to adults in Liverpool, with one of the busiest emergency departments in the North West. 750,000 plus people receive specialist care from the provider each year across Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, the Isle of Man and beyond. RLBUHT is a major centre for the diagnosis, treatment, care and research of cancer.
As a Liverpool 5G Consortium partner, RLBUHT has delivered:
- Telehealth in a Box, which used assistive technology to support earlier discharge of patients from hospital to their own homes. The trial has been delivered by Merseycare, Liverpool CCG and their telehealth supplier, Docobo. A portable multi-media telehealth monitor is used to record clinical, life style and quality of life data each day. The device delivers appropriate condition-specific information to patients, helping them manage their conditions more effectively.
Key features: the device measures ECG, heart rate, and heart rate variability without the need for wires/leads; bio-impedance measurements monitor blood flow and breathing rate.
- VR Headsets were used in a palliative care project as a distraction for pain management. VR headsets use 5G signals to allow streaming of a full range of virtual reality experiences, rather than viewing limited pre-loaded experiences.
- The ‘Hospital to Home’ SME testbed created a “smart room” in Liverpool’s life sciences accelerator building, which provides technology SMEs with an environment for testing 5G connectivity of products. Two testing environments are available: a replica single inpatient bedroom and a mock-up house with bedroom and kitchen facilities. End user device connectivity in the accelerator smart room is provided using WiFi, LoRa and Ethernet connections. The 5G testbed brings together these technologies to provide a combination of services (private networking, internet access and back-haul for the LoRa) and delivers them using mmWave inter-building links, city-owned fibre and independent data-centre for hosting and peering.
